seagulls on ostrich egg

Seagulls - Carved on an Emu Egg,
fighting over the posts to land on.
Sits on a piece of drift wood.

Migration to the Sunshine Coast and nesting in Gibsons came about after travelling from Ontario to BC, then Alaska to New Zealand. Along the way, I have enjoyed sewing, quilting, painting, and many years of creating miniatures focusing on the woodcarving of furniture and whimsy. While in New Zealand I found the Ostrich and Emu Farm that started a whole new field of creative expression for my many talents. In New Zealand along with Bone-carving, Mother Nature in her finest garb and the New Zealand Wearable Arts, I found Eggshells. That led to a group of talented 'Eggers' willing to share their teachings on-line. I treasure the uniqueness of the fresh canvas that each new egg presents.

in the shell of the Emu egg to
enhance the carvings. NO paint is used.

I have enjoyed making the Faberge style jewel boxes and decorative items but my passion quickly became the carving of the Emu Eggshells, Ostrich and Goose. The Emu egg arrives dark green from the bird. Depending on the age and health of the bird, the eggs can be different sizes and shades of colours. When you take the outer layer off you find a dusky green shade, then more layers into a beautiful teal green, then blue green and into white. I started doing scrimshaw etchings in the beginning but am now developing a style of 3 dimensional carving and incorporating the coloured layers into my designs and having the colours work with me in the pictures. Depending on how the light hits the carving, different highlights will show and catch your eye.
ostrich egg jewel boxes
Ostrich jewel boxes and Baby Carriage
- All are created in the style of Faberge Eggs.
The two large ones are Ostrich Eggs, the one on the left opens plus has a tray on the top. The one on the right is a basket, the handle is part of the egg. The baby carriage is a Goose Egg

Using a pattern or theme of your choice or a photo of what you wish, I will carve it into the eggshell giving you a truly treasured piece of art for your home.

NB. I only use infertile eggs and most of the goose egg contents are used in baking. I can say that this is the ultimate in recycling! Nothing is wasted. For the few (I hope) that get broken along the way, they are returned to the earth to nurture the soil in the garden.
